nisa' Filastin: Women of Palestine Postcard Set

€30.00

*Shipping starts early July

These postcards commemorate just some of the women that played extremely important roles in Palestinian resistance to British occupation and Zionism.

This project originally started as a collection of postcards of Irish women in the revolutionary years in Ireland. This was born out of my frustration of the lack of statues commemorating women in Limerick City and the underrepresentation and overlooking of women’s roles throughout history. My research took me onto the profile of Kathleen Clarke, who lived just up the road from my apartment. Clarke was heavily involved in Ireland’s fight for freedom from British rule. One of her involvements which inspired this project was post the 1916 rising, Clarke commissioned artists to draw up postcard designs to raise money for the widows and children left impoverished by the events that transpired.

I have been left horrified by the ongoing genocide in Palestine and want to use my voice and position as an artist to stand in solidarity with the people of Palestine. I felt embarrassed that I could not name a single Palestinian woman so I spent the past few weeks researching, with the aim to educate myself and others. Just as Kathleen Clarke organised the sales of postcards to raise money for the women and children left impoverished by the events of the 1916 Rising, I have created a set of postcards to raise money for the Palestinian people suffering immensely due to the ongoing genocide and now man made famine and drought carried out by the state of Israel.

I would like to stress that this is just an extremely small selection of those who contributed to Palestine’s fight for freedom. I also would like to highlight that the women featured on these postcards were often from wealthy backgrounds that had the privilege to have their stories recorded, but there are so many other stories not recorded or counted for due to classism, sexism, and discrimination. Unfortunately, I could not dedicate a card to each and every woman I came across so I would highly recommend further reading of this time period and of the individuals and groups that fought for the cause.

This postcard set include a card of:

  • Wadi’a Qaddura Khartabil - politician, activist, and pioneering leader of the Palestinian women’s movement in both Palestine and the diaspora.

  • Karimeh Abbud - photographer and artist who lived and worked in Palestine in the first half of the twentieth century. She was one of the first woman photographers in Palestine and the Middle East.

  • Tarab Abdul Hadi - activist, feminist, and co-founder of the Palestinian Arab Women’s Congress.

  • Asma Tubi - writer who was considered to be the first Arab woman to document oral histories.

  • Hind al-Husseini - rescued 55 orphaned survivors of the Deir Yassin massacre and founded an orphanage which then became a school providing education to orphans and other children

  • Matiel Mogannam - pioneer of the women's movement in Palestine and a political activist opposed to the British Mandate and the Zionist movement.

  • Tatreez - meaning "embroidery" in Arabic, is used to refer to the traditional style of embroidery practiced in Palestine and Palestinian diaspora communities

  • Women’s Unions and Organisations - highlighting the work of the Palestinian Arab Women’s Congress and other unions and organisations opposed to the British Mandate and Zionist movement.
